A ROLE MODEL

This photographic project captures the transformative and resilient journey of Jean-Max, a bold and transgressive figure whose story has been documented over two years through an affectionate and intimate lens. Fondly known as "Haití" at the AMOR REAL foundation, Jean-Max embodies the challenges faced by marginalized communities in Colombia, a country plagued by inequality, discrimination, and social exclusion. As a Black, queer, migrant, and former street dweller, he represents "the minority of the minority."

The project narrates my friendship with him and his remarkable transition from life on the streets to closing fashion shows, posing for renowned designers, and appearing in music videos. Each photograph captures his unwavering strength and the symbolic power of free self-expression, defying dominant heteronormative narratives and societal prejudices.

This work not only celebrates Jean Max's empowerment but also highlights his role as a beacon of hope and diversity for marginalized communities. His authenticity, charisma, and courage have made him a true role model, challenging stereotypes and inspiring others to embrace their individuality.

Jean Max exemplifies how art can amplify silent heroes and address complex societal issues. Through photography, we capture his fight for visibility, empowerment, and freedom from traditional beauty ideals and societal constraints. This project honors not only Jean Max's story but also my 20-year career documenting LGBTQ+ communities, their subcultures, and fostering Queer cultural events.

Winning this grant would allow me to continue this meaningful exploration, culminating in a documentary-fiction film titled Jean Max: The Story of a Former Street Dweller and Haitian Migrant. Additionally, it would provide crucial support for Jean Max's modeling career, which stands as a testament to the transformative power of art and self-expression. Fashion has its roots in the streets, and Jean Max's journey embodies this ethos, reminding us of the role visual artists play in shedding light on untold stories and celebrating diversity.
