A Hymn Of Dust Settles is a personal documentary piece capturing the richness and randomness of life in Algeria just before the COVID-19 lockdown, where I was then stranded for five months after not being able to return to my hometown of Malaysia. More than a record of that time, it is an attempt to carry the stories of Algeria beyond its political narratives as I had previously known and instead, to understand a place through its people, landscapes, and daily life—capturing the raw beauty of resilience, kinship, and culture.

What was meant to be a brief visit to see an Algerian friend I met back in Malaysia became something else entirely. As I watched Algeria and the world inch toward shutdown, I found myself on the brink of suspension in a country I had never imagined knowing so intimately, at such a vulnerable moment in history.

This project is a time capsule—of chance, dynamic stillness, and the deep interconnections of living. It is a testament to how connection and our shared humanity emerges in our willingness to surrender to our circumstances and when kindness, presence and curiosity become balms for uncertainty.
