From October 29 to November 8, thousands of believers climb the narrow stairs, some on their knees, dressed in light blue clothes to pay for their sins, give thanks for grace achieved or to ask for mercy of the Immaculate Conception.
Popularly known as "Festa do Morro", it originated from the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in Brazil in 1904, when the monument to the "Our Lady of Conception" was inaugurated in Recife, Pernambuco. Since then, the date has become a municipal holiday.
