The project „85” is my visual story which explores relationship between human and nature on the volcanic canary island (la Palma) right after the eruption of the volcano Cumbre Vieja.
When it comes to questions about how the volcanoes work, practically everything is a mystery. Signals may appear before the eruption, but it is never certain it will occur. It is almost impossible to determine the time when the eruption starts and the moment when magma becomes unstable or predict the intensity of the eruption. La Palma (Spanish island) only exists because of volcanic eruption built this land long time ago, forming the archipelago known as the Canary Islands. In 2021, during 85 days the volcano Cumbre Vieja on La Palma was active. The eruption was the longest in the history of the island and the most destructive of the last century in Europe. The lava erupted uncontrollably, burning everything on its way to the sea. The natural phenomenon became a heartbreaking experience, something before not studied, plunging the inhabitants of La Palma into uncertainty and sorrow. Thousands of people were evacuated from their houses and many had only minutes to pack up their belongings. Volcanoes symbolize the duality of destructive force and the new beginning. Humans abuse and exploit the natural world for their own convenience thinking we have it under control but we’re not in control at all. Project visualize a human story through the photographs of the nature which entered people’s lives suddenly and unexpectedly, showing how close and inseparable is relationship of human and nature and how fragile is the environment shaped and managed by man.
