eighteen turns

To my family, homosexuality is a disease, shameful and wrong. I moved to America to escape from this misconception and search for a way of living honestly. I found a sense of belonging among other queer POC. We often shared similar experiences. Many of us had grown up in homophobic and sexist families, without representations of queer love, desire, and intimacy. We had difficulties navigating multi-cultural identities, including differences in gender norms and conceptions of family. We also faced discrimination in the United States, not only because of our gender expression but also because of our skin color. These led me to photograph our own fragility.
