The exhibition traces 100 years of urban life through photographs that capture the people, communities, and changing social landscapes of America's cities.
Overview
Featuring works by 34 photographers created between 1907 and 2012, Portrait Of A City: A Century Of American Photography explores one hundred years of American urban life through the people who lived, worked, and moved through its streets. Set in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, the photographs reveal cities as dynamic stages for social change, from mass immigration and industrial growth to moments of counterculture and protest.
Highlights include works by Alfred Stieglitz, Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and Bruce Davidson. Presented in partnership with The Savings Bank Foundation DNB, the exhibition draws from its collection of twentieth-century American photography, with thanks to Lillehammer Art Museum.
