“Insects For Peace” is a closer look to a Colombian social initiative that promotes the reintegration of former members of the FARC-EP and indigenous people training them to become smallholder insect producers.
“Insects For Peace” is the first chapter of my ongoing project I N S C T S that documents the solutions insect farming offers to some global environmental and social challenges.
Insect farming is a re-distributive and sustainable agricultural practice with the potential of empowering smallholder farmers all over the world.
This chapter is a closer look to “Insectos Por La Paz”, a social initiative that promotes the reintegration of former members of the “Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People’s Army” (FARC-EP) and supports the livelihoods of indigenous people and those affected by the conflict training them to become smallholder insect producers.
Farming insects could make smallholder farmers less dependent on expensive - and environmentally costly - imported feed and fertilizers.
Insect farming is expected to grow exponentially in the near future and to contribute to address many enviromental and social issues.
Within the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: zero hunger, climate action, life on land, no poverty, good jobs and economic growth, good health, gender equality, responsible consumption.
“Insectos Por La Paz” is an inspirational example of what insect agriculture can do in the Global South.
