“I AM” was birthed as an exploratory and reclamation process of inner and outer resymbolisation as self.
Between 2016 and 2020, I underwent a period of katabasis which was an incredibly challenging and transformative time of shedding and redefining my self, purpose, vision, values and artistic practice.
I became deeply curious and fascinated with surrealism, particularly the art of women surrealists, feminism, tarot, meditation, mysticism, embodied sensuality, and personal alchemy according to the individuation teachings of Carl Jung.
In addition, i read and re-read two key literary texts that resonated to the call I was following; Helene Cixous’s, “The Laugh of the Medusa” and Audre Lorde’s,“Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power.”
In response to my expanded sensitivity to the world and rooted desire for alternate creative expression, my practice previously centred on Photography begun to evolve into painting, video, sound recordings, movement and a daily tarot practice which continues to be my guiding mirror of self reflection
My daily Tarot practice is now a parallel semiotic lens of how I symbolically perceive, process, navigate and interact with myself and the world with its evolving socio-political and institutional systems.
“I AM” was birthed as an exploratory and reclamation process of inner and outer resymbolisation as self and reflects some visual influence of utilising the Tarot as a developmental study tool.
'I AM' was part of an online Virtual Photography 20:20 Exhibition by One Off Contemporary Gallery in Nairobi, Kenya in June 2020.
