Hong Kong's protests started in June against plans to allow extradition to mainland China which protestors feared this could undermine judicial independence and endanger dissidents. Clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent, with police firing live bullets, tear gas and other means of unequal forces to disperse crowds. Hong Kong police have used tear gas to quell pro-democracy protests almost every weekend and occasionally on weeknights since June 12 until late December 2019. They’ve fired nearly 16,000 rounds in total, according to a tally of figures released in police briefings, in areas home to as much as 88% of Hong Kong’s 7.4 million residents, thus posing serious health issues in many communities.
