Transcapes

Transcapes (2021-2023) is an ongoing long-term project that observes the transformation of former lignite mines into new landscapes. The process called „Recultivation“ describes the restoration of mountains, fields, lakes, rivers, and forests that were previously destroyed to satisfy humanity's hunger for energy. What interests me is the understanding of nature and environment of those who guide and carry out this restoration. What will the landscapes look like that are designed based on needs assessments, community interests, and feasibility studies? And what influence will natural processes have on them?
