The R of Taurus - PhMuseum

“The R of Taurus” consists of photographs taken on the southernmost and largest island of Greece, the Mediterranean Crete.

I remember my first ever visit at the island was when I was at a very young age due to a family vacation trip. The striking mural of the “Bull leaping”, a ceremony to highlight the courage of the young and the respect of the sacred animal, was unknowingly the start of my admiration and personal quest.

Since then the island’s history and unique identity have not left me unmoved.

There are many references to Crete in Greek mythology, but I personally distinguish the abduction of Εurope from Zeus. According to Greek mythology Zeus metamorphosed into a white bull, gained the trust of Europe and carried her to Crete where she bore him 3 sons.

Many years later I chose to visit the island with my identity as a photographer.

The unique landscape of the island, the intense tradition that connects the past with the present, and the aesthetics of the modern man in the natural environment are some of the subjects that I often notice with my camera.

This series of photos is sample of a work that is still in progress. Looking at these images, I feel that they stand strong in their oblivion and defy the passage of time. Most important to me is that they remind me of the legacy of Europe's ancient civilization, the one left by the Taurus.
