From 2015 to today, I have investigated the Korean peninsula with photography, exploring its social phenomena, the results obtained but also the critical issues. In my visual investigation I have often adopted a documentary approach, sometimes a photojournalistic approach, but in any case refraining from manipulating the images. In my Broken Mirror project, I merged my vision of North Korea with that of an AI (artificial intelligence).
In particular, after having provided the descriptions of the scenarios I had in mind to the AI and remaining disappointed by the results obtained, far from my expectations, I forced the AI to repeat its act of creation many times on the same texts provided by me. Until, in some way, the AI expressed its frustration starting to produce images in which it merged elements that were initially distinct, creating unexpected mutations.
Broken Mirror is therefore the result of a compromise between me and AI, where the exceptional nature of North Korean society, strongly influenced by one of the toughest totalitarian regimes in the world, which effectively isolates the country and its inhabitants therefore it is difficult to know their fate, it is depicted through the insertion of alienating elements, in a sort of Kafkaesque metamophorsis.
