Witness to the Emptied

Between endemic droughts, tariff fall-outs, and the coronavirus, the countryside of the American Midwest takes on a dystopian air spotted with dilapidated buildings and agricultural castoffs. The landscape is now domain to the animal world; both domesticated and wild, alive and dead. They confront the artist's gaze, asking whether human works matter and whether there is still a place for us in the landscape at all. Nature, it seems is giving rise to an answer. From the ground beneath her, something new and alien arises, even as the artist herself is left behind, a witness to the end of humankind.
