This Is That

Motion, chance, and paradox constitute the core. Celebration of beauty with the undertone of a shadow - of sadness, of loss.

The Title, "This Is That" refers to the layering of meaning that motifs in an image obtain, dictated by the way they are presented. For instance, a mere stone in a footpath on a mountain turns into a human-like head as if to remind hikers of the subtle presence of humans in organic matter, as in (6243 - Stone as I am(. The same stone blended in a composite of different images (2329 City Skull) could read as a reminder of death through the pollution that humans are creating unintended through technology in structures needed to advance civilization.

The suggestion of something sinister in the image (9308 Glamour and Skull) of a woman portrayed in a golden light about to drape herself in a scarf also gold in color (the color suggesting upbeat energy), is caused by the double image of another head joined to hers. This shadowlike head is captured through the slow shutter speed of a camera combined with both ambient and artificial light. As in (2329 City Skull)

paradox reigns. As in (6243 Stone As I Am) "This" is not only this but "that".

"Nothing is what it seems to be", as the Dutch poet Martinus Nijhoff declared in the meme, "Lees maar, er staat niet wat er staat."
