Not too many years ago, the term ‘Cholita’ was a derogatory name for young Indigenous women. Nowadays, Cholitas in Bolivia, proudly wear traditional clothing to break ethnic barriers.

Not too many years ago, the term ‘Cholita’ was a derogatory name for young Indigenous women. Nowadays, Cholitas in Bolivia, proudly wear traditional clothing to break ethnic barriers. Everything changed with the election of Evo Morales in 2006. The first indigenous president in the history of Bolivia, he valued the status of the Cholitas and brought them to the front of the stage.

Over the past decade, they have become more present in politics, on television, and even in the field of fashion. Between tradition and modernity, they are now an integral part of Bolivia’s national identity.

I was interested in capturing the daring Cholitas. These Cholitas practice extreme sports that have been mostly led by men. Being from Peru, a neighboring country where we have similar backgrounds; the thought of getting to know them and capturing really excited me.
