PHmuseum 2019 Women Photographers Grant Now Open For Submissions

Our annual open call is back for its third edition with a great jury and £10,000, a solo show at Fotografia Europea, three features on Vogue Italia, and educational opportunities among the main prizes.

Our annual open call is back for its third edition with a great jury and £10,000, a solo show at Fotografia Europea, three features on Vogue Italia, and educational opportunities among the main prizes.

In 2017 we launched the first edition of our Women Photographers Grant with the aim of empowering the work and careers of female and non-binary professionals of all ages and from all countries working in diverse areas of photography. While the main goal of the initiative stays the same, every year we work to engage with new partners to offer opportunities beyond the monetary prizes and further this relevant conversation in diverse contexts.

Vogue Italia, for example, has been supporting the initiative since the beginning and last year they also invited PHmuseum Director Giuseppe Oliverio to take part in a relevant panel discussion on gender equality moderated by Monica Allende. This year they will keep supporting photographers with a projection of the shortlisted works at the 2019 Photo Vogue Festival in Milan, Italy, and by featuring the work of three applicants on Vogue Italia.

Every year we also collaborate with a photography festival to grant a solo show to one of the applicants. In 2018 it was Ulla Devender who exhibited at Croatian festival Organ Vida and in 2019 it has been Ayline Olukman who exhibits at Verzasca Foto Festival in Switzerland. For this edition, a photographer will be handpicked by Fotografia Europea's Artistic Director to showcase their work at the 2020 edition of the festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

PHmuseum’s curators will further select three photographers who will each access a free 60-minute online portfolio review from the innovative PHmuseum Educational Program, plus an additional three who will be featured on the Swiss online publication YET Magazine. The New Generation Prize, awarded to a photographer under 30 years of age, will include a one-hour online portfolio review with Magnum Photos Global Business Development Director Fiona Rogers, and a nomination to World Press Photo's 2020 Joop Swart Masterclass.

The call offers £5,000, £2,000, and £1,000 to the first, second, and third prize winners respectively, while £2,000 will be granted to the recipient of the New Generation Prize. To apply you are invited to enter one, or multiple, series centred around a specific theme, narrative, or concept. At least four images must have been shot after 1 January 2016. All approaches are welcomed, from classic narratives to experimental projects.

Submissions will be reviewed by an outstanding jury comprising Margaret Steber (photographer), Marina Paulenka (Artistic Director at UNSEEN), Angelica Dass (photographer), and Ashleigh Kane (Arts and Culture Editor at Dazed). The entry fee is £27 per project, yet you can take advantage of the £18 Early Bird fee if you apply before 19 September. The final deadline is set for 10 October.

This Grant means to facilitate the growth of the new generations and promote stories narrated from a female perspective, while responding to the necessity to fight for gender equality in the industry. Join our open call at phmuseum.com/grant, share it with friends and colleagues who can benefit from it... and good luck!
