Photo Vogue Festival 2021 unfolds through both physical and digital dimensions, proposing a series of exhibitions, screenings, and talks dealing with social themes by means of conscious fashion photography. The talks will be broadcasted on the digital platform photovoguefestival.vogue.it.

These four days of free exhibitions, talks, and round tables focus on the intertwinement between aesthetics and ethics. The main theme of the festival is “Reframing History”. The intention is that of proposing alternative perspectives on neglected historical figures and stereotyped narratives. One of the founding missions of the PhotoVogue platform is the achievement of what Nigerian novelist and critic Chinua Achebe defines as "a balance of stories". According to an African proverb often quoted by Achebe, "until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter".

Among the exhibitions, the collective show Reframing History/35 chapters features 35 photographers selected through the Open Call on Photo Vogue. The artists allow visitors to interact with an array of unique and versatile views concerning the reformulation of the past and its tales. The projects on show reframe omitted or forgotten figures as well as reclaiming non-traditional conceptions of beauty. Furthermore, the exhibition Reframing History/12 chapters includes the works of 12 artists selected by members of the jury and Vogue Italia’s photographic department. Additional displays include “A Reframed Library”, a selection of photobooks wishing to promote underrepresented voices in storytelling, “Reframing History/2 chapters”, and “Visions from the World”.

The festival incorporated an extremely rich program of talks live at Base Milano, which are all streamed online too. In line with the theme and mission of the festival, talks will range from photojournalism to fashion photography, with the purpose of exploring current issues such as diversity and inclusivity, not only in terms of the subject of the tales, but also in terms of those who narrate the stories. Moreover, for the first time, the ‘ask me anything’ panel that will go live on Saturday 20th will offer the chance to ask questions directly to experts, with the aim of creating an interaction between connoisseurs and photographers seeking advice.

We highly encourage to follow the festival and join the conversation both live and online. To follow the events or check for additional information, click here. Below you can find all the practical info.
