The fourth edition of the PHMuseum 2016 Grantis open for submissions, with a distinguished jury comprised of KathyRyan (Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine); Donald Weber (Photographerand member of VII Photo); François Hébel (Art Director and Curator); and FranciscoMata Rosas (Photographer and Researcher at UAM). They will award $4,000 in cash prizes, including the NewGeneration Prize (US$500) which will be assigned to a photographer under the age of25. The contest has no entry fee, but you need to be an approved photographer within thePHmuseum curated community in order to present your work. Deadline: June 14th. Learn more at phmuseum.com/grant.
W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography
The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund iscurrently accepting applications for its 37th Grant in Humanistic Photography.This illustrious award is handed out annually to a photographer whose previouswork, and proposed project, demonstrates extraordinary commitment to documentingthe human condition. A number of finalists will be selected by a three-memberinternational jury, and only then will they be invited to submit a moreextensive portfolio for a second round of judging. The winner will receive aUS$30,000 prize fund, while an additional US$5,000 will be distributed to oneor more finalists considered worthy of special recognition. US$50 entry fee.Deadline: May 31st.
The Magnum and LensCulture Photography Awards 2016
Magnum Photos has partnered withLensCulture to create a new and exciting opportunity that honors the world’sbest visual storytellers. 12 winners and 20 finalists will be selected from Documentary,Open, Street, Portrait, Fine Art, and Photojournalism categories. The juryfeatures seven renowned names working in the industry: Martin Parr(President of Magnum), David Kogan (CEO, Magnum Photos), Stacey Baker (PhotoEditor, New York Times Magazine), David Alan Harvey (Founder of Burn Magazine),Amy Pereira (Director of Photography, MSNBC), Newsha Tavakolian (MagnumPhotographer), and Jim Casper (Editor-in-Chief, LensCulture). Prizes include US$18,000in cash awards, an online Magnum exhibition, international press exposure,festival projections, portfolio reviews, and featured articles. Deadline: May24th.
Canon Female Photojournalist Award
The 16th Canon Female Photojournalist Award– supported by ELLE Magazine in association with Images Evidence – will award €8,000to a female photojournalist covering social, economic, political, or culturalsubjects. Presented every year at Visa pour l’Image, the largest internationalfestival of photojournalism, the grant is designed to help with the productionor completion of a long-term photo-reportage project. Applicants will be judgedupon both the quality of their photographs and the pertinence of theirproposal. Women visual storytellers of any age and nationality may apply. Entryis free. The submissions dossier must be sent by May 17th.
The Getty Images Grants for EditorialPhotography aims to support independent photojournalists working around theworld. Five winners will each receive US$10,000; funds designed to help with thepursuit of work that is personally significant and would otherwise be difficultto actualize. “Selection will be based on the judges’ determination ofapplicant’s ability to execute the submitted project with compelling visualnarrative in documentary feature format” say the organizers. Carolyn Cole(Photographer, Los Angeles Times), Jean-Francois LeRoy (Director General, VisaPour l’Image), Eli Reed (Photographer, Magnum Photos), Paul Moakley (DeputyDirector of Photography, TIME), and Sarah Leen (Director of Photography,National Geographic) are the jury members. Deadline: May 18th.
The Alfred Fried Photography Award
Presented by both the PhotographischeGesellschaft (Vienna-based Photographic Society), and Edition Lammerhuber(Austrian publisher), the Alfred Fried Photography Award supports visualstorytellers whose work documents mankind’s efforts to live together inharmony. The Peace Image of the Year will receive €10,000. Jury members includeGerd Ludwig (Photographer, National Geographic Creative), Pascal Maitre (Photographer,GEO, National Geographic), Klaus Lorbeer (Editor-in-chief, Foto Objektiv), and ErichLessing (Photographer, Magnum). Deadline: June 1st.
IAFOR Documentary Photography Award
Emerging photographers and photojournalistsare invited to apply for the annual International Academic Forum (IAFOR)Documentary Photography Award, which is this year dedicated to the theme of “Justice.”“By seeking to reveal the world’s injustices, the photographer acts as apowerful agent of change. When the photographer bears witness to socialproblems, human rights abuses, suffering, conflict, poverty, and to thosestruggling on the margins of society, some justice is done to the subject inthat they are noticed and given hope of a voice” explain the judges. The GrandPrize carries a £1,000 cash award. World Press Photo will also add the winnerto its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass. Applicants mustbe younger than 31 years old or enrolled in an educational program on June 1st,2016. Deadline: June 1st.
