PHM 2016 Grant

The PHmuseum 2016 Grant is a photography contest organized to help the photographers in our network develop their careers and personal projects. This year, a jury comprised of Kathy Ryan, Donald Weber, François Hébel and Francisco Mata Rosas will award a 1st (US$2,000), 2nd (US$1,000), and 3rd Prize (US$500). A New Generation Prize – which comes with a US$500 cash award and an exhibition at Gazebook Sicily Photobook Festival – will also be granted to the best story submitted by a photographer under the age of 25. The contest has no entry fee, but you need to be an approved photographer within the PHmuseum curated community in order to submit your work. Apply before June 14th at phmuseum.com/grant.

Ian Parry Scholarship

The Ian Parry Scholarship is an annualinternational photography contest aimed at young, emerging photographers whoare either attending a full-time photographic course, or are under 24 years ofage. In this 2016 edition, there are two awards – The Award for Achievement andthe Award for Potential, the latter coming with a newly introduced year-longMentorship Program. An esteemed jury composed of such renowned industry figuresas Aidan Sullivan, Rebecca McClelland, Harriet Logan, Don McCullin, and TomStoddart will award the photographers who they feel are striving to create andproduce relevant and meaningful photojournalism. Each winner will be given $3,500to help support their chosen project and the World Press Photo automaticallyaccepts the Award for Achievement recipient into its list of Joop SwartMasterclass nominees. Entry is free. Deadline: July 7th.

Tokyo International Photography Festival 2016 Competition

The Tokyo International Photography Competition(TIPC), launched back in 2013, is designed to help discover new photographictalent and support the formation of diverse cultural networks. A distinguished juryfeaturing Christine Barthe (Curator, Musée du Quai Branly); Erik Kessels(Artist and Photography Curator); Sandra Phillips (Senior Curator, SFMOMA), MarcPrust (Independent Photography Consultant); and Azu Nwagbogu (Founder and Director,African Artists’ Foundation) will review all entries and select 8 photographerswhose work will form part of a traveling exhibition that will appear in Tokyo,New York, and a number of other host cities. The theme of this fourth editionof TIPC is “origin.” Deadline: June 28th.

Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize

The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize is theleading accolade in portrait photography. “In the Prize’s search forexcellence, photographers are encouraged to interpret ‘portrait’ in its widestsense of ‘photography concerned with portraying people with an emphasis ontheir identity as individuals’” say the organizers (National Portrait Gallery,London). The overall winner will receive £15,000, while a number of othershortlisted artists will be awarded cash prizes at the jury’s discretion.Applicants under the age of 35 are also eligible for the John Kobal New WorkAward which carries a prize fund of £4,000 and a commission from the NationalPortrait Gallery to photograph a sitter connected with the UK film industry. Allsubmissions are judged anonymously from original prints. Deadline: July 5th.

Unseen Dummy Award

Unseen (international photography platform)and Lecturis (publishing company) have once again joined forces to offerphotographers and designers from around the world the opportunity to realize,and publish, their dummy photobook. 50 shortlisted dummies will be exhibited atthe 2016 Unseen Photo Fair (23 – 25 September), during which a distinguishedjury including Irma Boom, Sean O’Hagan, and Paul van Mameren will come together toselect five finalists and one winner. To enter, applicants must send a physicalcopy of their dummy. Submissions are accepted by post up until July 1st.

Pierre & Alexandra Boulat Award

The Pierre & Alexandra Boulat Awardaims to support young photographers who wish to cover the social, economic,political, and cultural issues of our time in a journalistic manner. An endowmentof €8000 is granted to the winner to help with the production and realizationof a story that has not been told that would otherwise be difficult toaccomplish. This work will then be exhibited at the Visa pour l’Image photojournalismfestival (Perpignan) and in the Cosmos Galerie (Paris) in 2017. Previousrecipients include Jean Chung, Masie Crow, Lizzie Saadin, Maciek Nabrdalik,Arnau Bach, Kosuke Okahara, and Alfonso Moral. The application dossier must besent by June 17th.
