A Guide To June 2023 Photo Awards & Opportunities

Foam Talent Call, Carte Blanche Student, Emergentes - Encontros da Imagem Portfolio Reviews, JIPFest Call for Submissions, Fotofestival Lenzburg, Hariban Award and PhotoVogue Local Open Call are among the opportunities we selected this month.

Foam Talent Call 2023 / Deadline 18 June / Entry fee 30 €

A jumpstart for many young photographers’ careers, Foam Talent Call has been selecting outstanding emerging projects since 2007. The selected artists will have their portfolio published in Foam Magazine's Talent issue, their work exhibited in a show in Foam’s museum in Amsterdam, online and in a traveling exhibition, and will receive a compensation of €1,300. They will benefit from several networking opportunities and events for the dissemination of their work, such as talks, masterclasses, and podcasts. Additionally, the work of one photographer will be added to the Art Collection Deutsche Börse, one of the most important collections of international contemporary photography.

Carte Blanche Student 2023 / Deadline 12 June / No entry fee

Each year, four students from master's or bachelor programs in photography or visual arts are selected from the Carte Blanche open call to showcase their work in the prestigious Paris Photo at the Grand Palais, and in a large format exhibition in one of the main Paris train stations.

Juried by experts in the field such as Paris Photo artistic director Anna Planas and co-founder of the publishing house Loose Joints Lewis Chaplin, the Carte Blanche is an opportunity for exchange and exposure in a 64,500-visitors market context.

Any 18 years old and over student can submit their work by June 12, with no entry fee. Find out more on their website.

Emergentes 2023 - Encontros da Imagem Portfolio Reviews / Deadline 5 June / Entry fee € 20

Works responding to the 2023 edition’s theme of the Portuguese reference festival, Essay for the Future, are welcome to apply for the Festival’s annual portfolio reviews. Each year, the reviews are putting photographers in touch with internationally and nationally acclaimed gallerists, commissioners, publishers and curators, shaping opportunities for the participants’ artistic developments.

Among the reviewed projects, one will eventually be selected for a 5000 € prize, plus a solo exhibition at Encontros da Imagem festival in 2024, where the nine remaining finalists will be exhibited in a group show.

JIPFest 2023 Call for Submissions / Deadline 31 May / No entry fee

Taking place in September 2023, Jakarta International Photo Festival (JIPFest) invites international photographers to submit photographs, multimedia, or video work showing different perspectives on the festival theme, Generation, which does not only refer to a specific group of people of the same age, but aims to trigger reflection on the legacy of colonialism and capitalism, and on the idea of conducting critical research into history and into the future. The selected works will be exhibited during the festival, from 8 to 24 September.

Fotofestival Lenzburg / Deadline 7 June / Entry fee 23 €

Themed “Synthesis”, this year’s edition of the up-and-coming Swiss festival is welcoming submissions to be part of their main exhibition program. Five projects showing a deep understanding of the theme will be selected, with one of them being awarded the Jury Award of 1,500 CHF (1545 € approx.) aimed at supporting further development of the artist’s work. Additionally, one selected photographer will take part in a two-week residency in Lenzburg during August 2023, including free accommodation, travel expenses and a stipend of 500 CHF (515 € approx.).

Hariban Award - International Collotype Competition 2023 / Deadline 15 June / Entry fee  36 €

The Hariban Award presents an opportunity to combine a 170-year-old traditional Japanese technique, that of collotypes using glass plates, with contemporary photography: by submitting black and white photographs, artists can access the chance to take part in a two-week residency in Kyoto from October 2023 aimed at the collaboration with master printers of Benrido, one of the few studios in the world capable of producing fine colour collotype prints, and produce eight collotype prints of their work to be displayed in a solo exhibition. Flights, accommodation, and production expenses will be provided.

 PhotoVogue - Spanish Women: A Contemporary Portrait of Strength and Beauty / Deadline 27 June / No entry fee

The second PhotoVogue Local Open Call is selecting works that celebrate Spanish talent, within the framework of the prominent PhotoESPAÑA Festival, and Vogue España turning 35. Poetic, powerful, and representative embodiments of the theme, spanning from surreal and fantastic works to documentary and realistic ones are encouraged: the selected artists will be part of one of the main exhibitions of 2023 PhotoVogue Festival in Milan, and will be featured in an issue of Vogue España

OTHER DEADLINES

Blurring The Lines 2023 / Deadline 30 June / No Entry Fee

Coming to its seventh edition, the Blurring the Lines platform, launched by Urbanautica, collaborates with international institutions to promote dialogue and research between photography graduates. Each year, a catalog with all the shortlisted projects is published, and one or more winners are selected. Exhibitions, international conferences, books, students' meetings and talent scouting activities are organised, helping to start the young photographers' careers. The call is open to graduating students and recent graduates worldwide. Institutions can nominate their students and start the selection process. Applications are open until June 30, with no entry fee. Email your school information to info@blurringthelines.org to receive the call.

RPS Postgraduate Bursary / Deadline 13 June / No Entry Fee

RPS offers an annual bursary of £3,500 in support of a postgraduate student enrolled in a photography course, or undertaking research in photography. In addition to the funding, MPB also offers a visit to MPB's Brighton headquarters and warehouse to provide the artist with an opportunity to select equipment to loan. Additionally, the recepient will also have the opportunity to have their portfolio printed and receive remote mentoring from Metro Imaging.
