The 2020 World Press Photo Contest Finalists

The dutch foundation has announced the judges' selection for the best pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism. Among them, Nikita Teryoshin, the PHmuseum 2019 Photography Grant first prize recipient.

An independent jury of 17 internationally recognised photography experts has selected 44 photographers among the 4,000 applicants and 74,000 images received for the 63th edition of the renewed award.

They will compete for the prizes in the eight categories of the 2020 Photo Contest - Contemporary Issues, General News, Environment, Nature, Long-Term Projects, Portraits, Spot News and Sports - and for the World Press Photo of the Year, the image that will iconically remember us of 2019 visual production. Among them Russian photographer Nikita Teryoshin who was awarded the first prize of the PHmuseum 2019 Photography Grant. He will compete for the World Press Photo of the Year and Contemporary Issues Singles with a picture from Nothing personal - The Back Office Of War.

Pete Muller - photographer, multimedia producer and member of the 2020 Photo Contest general jury - commented on Nikita's image: “This is a photograph that was taken at an international arms showcase event. (...) In my mind I sort of imagine him in this halls of power, going in and out of these meetings, presenting these devices to people who will buy and sell and ultimately deploy them, but most of them will never actually understand how devastating it is to be in the receiving end of a weapon like that.” Tanvi Mishra, India, photo editor, curator, creative director, The Caravan, and 2020 Photo Contest General jury member said instead “It almost has a slightly glossy, advertising nature to it, and that’s where you wonder ‘does it follow within photojournalism? Does it not?’ But I think because it challenges that notion, that pulled us into it.” -
