Macho Bengal

ARTIST STATEMENT

Taking a person's picture usually means symbolically possessing them. In our work the roles of the dominant and the dominated are subjected to subversion, transforming the battle instead into a love story.

In the ‘Macho Bengal’ series, we investigate the female gaze trying to find a way of revealing ourselves while performing simultaneously as both subject and object, demolishing the boundaries between dual portraiture and self-portraiture. Our work is the offspring of an artistic collaboration where care, trust, and an interest in mythic female existences are all elements. We like drama and to stick our high heels into the dark mud! With the help of references to popular culture, exaggeration, and humor, we try to reveal the stereotypical by overplaying.

With a practice that moves freely between photography, writing, film, and installation we explore the relationship between a photographer and her subject. What happens when the passive model becomes the creator?

BIOS

The artist duo Matilde Søes Rasmussen (1990) and Marie Flarup Kristensen (1992) are both born and raised in Denmark, and both hold a BFA in Fine Art Photography from HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2021 we participated in two artist residencies as a duo: GlogauAiR in Berlin (3 months) and AiR351 Cascais (2 months), from where we have created a new body of work with yet unreleased material (not enclosed in this application, as the material hasn’t been developed yet). Together we have created two duo exhibitions in Gallery Entrance and Room 2012 in Gothenburg (SE), while having participated in group shows in VULKANO (SE) and Gallery NEJD (SE). In 2020 we self-published the zine ‘The Lookout’, shot a commission for Swedish Art magazine Period Zine, and participated in Landskrona Photo Festival. Marie has spent the past year working as the personal assistant of French artist Pauline Curnier Jardin, and Matilde has published her debut book of text and photography ‘Unprofessional’ with Disko Bay Books in Copenhagen.
