Born in 1991 in Avignon, Mathias Benguigui lives and works in Paris. In 2009, he started his career as a photographer by collaborating with cultural institutions such as the Nuits de Fourvière, the Festival Lumière, the Orchestre de Paris and produced several campaigns for the Musée des Confluences to promote their collections.

In 2016, he took a turn in his practice by obtaining the diploma «Photojournalism and Documentary» at EMI-CFD Paris and won the «Grand Prix Paris Match - Nature and Environment» with his first reportage Tao. Attracted by the visual narration of the real, he forged his photographic culture within the newspaper Libération as a photo editor.

Since then, he has pursued his career as a press photographer collaborating with Le Monde, Libération, Paris-Match, Télérama, and others, while focusing on the production of long- term personal documentary projects, questioning memory, identity and uprooting. In 2019, he was nominated for the Joop Swart Masterclass at the World Press Photo by the Vu’ Agency.

His latest project, Les Chants de l’Asphodèle (Asphodel Songs), was a four-hander with author Agathe Kalfas. It was presented for the first time at the Manuel Rivera Ortiz Foundation during the Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles 2021. The book published by Le Bec en l’air is available in bookshops and was presented at Paris Photo 2021.
