In my ongoing series, Displacement Detroit, beginning with my familial roots, I document the lands where my family once resided which are now vacant lots and I bring it to and explore the contemporary archive through photography, video, memorabilia and storytelling. My goals are to document the stories and images of individuals and communities that have been displaced by blight, environmental hazards and ways of gentrification. Having discovered within this research the lack of documentation of residential housing in the city of Detroit, I am currently researching and theorizing how the lack of documentation of specifically low to mid income residential housing initiates displacement and complicates revisiting. Therefore, distorting community narratives, ways of interrupting land recognition in places like the city of Detroit, and ultimately leading to gentrification.
