Drum and Bass - A self love story

Drum and Bass is a self love story to my culture. The photos are of a Bermudian male wearing an oversized version of a traditional Gombey mask and a young Bermudian woman with typical Bermudian characteristics and features. This shoot was done steps away from my childhood home in St. Georges.

Historically, the Gombeys were not viewed as a respectable art form by the island's ruling class and were banned by the slave masters. Slaves were allowed to dance only once a year and did so in masks in order to protest, without fear of retribution, the injustices done them by their slave masters.
