Conversations with Myself is a series of self-portraits in which I drape on my body in remnants from my past, and of other women in my life’s past, and summon up imagined moments in their lives, as women in the 1950’s, my mother’s childbearing years, to try to understand them, and thus myself more clearly. In the images I am in the present and the past at once, paying homage to the conjured characters, and commenting on what and how things have or have not shifted, based on the traditional influences of society and gender, the evolution of opportunities, ambition, psychology, technology, and demands and expectations regarding the family structure.
