Sublime Effroi

  • A cloud window that introduces us to the legends of the past in the canton of valais, its mysteries, legends and fears

  • The setting and direct source of the tales and legends of Valais is daily life, land of peasants, work and nature. Before being entertainment, stories are mainly a reflection of life. Their stories are based on Fear and the unpredictability of life.

  • Nature can be gentle, beautiful and generous, but also formidable. Earthquakes, avalanches, landslides, hurricanes... such events reflect the omnipotence of terrestrial and celestial forces.

  • One of the largest herbalist women in the canton of Valais, at almost 90 years old, she claims to see how respect and admiration for the mountain and how that fear has caused the animals to become extinct.

  • Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) is the author of more than two hundred works, inaugurating what we could call "meditative poetry of the landscape". At Die Alpen. a poetic painting of the mountain landscape is captured, in a concise and energetic language, animated by a deep feeling of the sublime and the beautiful when dealing with the beauty of the mountains and the sincerity of the simple inhabitants of the mountains in contrast to the corrupted civilization

  • Every wild population in which the presence of man is a reality is definitely and irretrievably conditioned by his presence. Man is the only animal in the global fauna that has followed the opposite pattern to other animals. While these have followed an evolutionary path adapting to the vital expectations depending on the conditions that the environment offers them, the mortal biped has dedicated itself to coupling the environment to its nature, transforming it without restraint or measure. It is already known that most of the global environmental misfortunes are human work, few of them of the hunting man.

  • Legends embody the fears that inspired the Alps and their floods. The struggles between animals and humans also symbolize the victory of progress and civilization in a nature, especially mountainous, mysterious and disturbing.

  • In alpine tales, heroes often have to face many natural cataclysms: avalanches, landslides, storms, Therefore, the excesses of nature are part of the intrigue and contribute to the fortunes or misfortunes of the characters. Perhaps it is for this reason that the man of Valais has always been afraid of the mountain, this world located above human measure and that can only host hostile forces and fantastic beings. After the three summer months, the farmer leads his herds to the foot of the rocks. It does not rise anymore, because it is no longer the world of men and it is better not to rape

  • Nature becomes beautiful due to its productive potential, man tames it and extracts all its substance

  • The local people needed to understand the incomprehensible, perpetuate the memory of their heroes, build their history in symbols. Explain the vagaries of nature and their fears of fabulous animals. So they gave free will to their imagination. Your dreams or your nightmares, in other ways, are they not somehow still ours?

  • These myths and legends impress us by the incessant appeal to wonder

  • one of the great fear of man with the mountain was wild animals and natural disasters. The summit of the Diablerets in the Valais owes its name to the devils that inhabited it and played with the rocks like bowling, hence the name "Quille du Diable" attributed to a local rock.

  • brown bears were the most feared animals in switzerland, which is why they were extinct in the 19th century

  • The paw of the last bear killed in the forest of Yesterday is nailed to a beam on the west facade of the bourgeois house. Exposed to the setting sun for 140 years, it is now a tourist attraction in the area

  • unpredictable and indomitable nature, with which this town coexists from its origins.

  • Why do these myths and legends still prevail? On the one hand, its rereading makes the landscapes regain a new meaning. One of the qualities of these stories is to draw attention to the beauty of the place, the usefulness of its safeguarding. Anyone who knows these stories becomes the guardian and responsible for this heritage. On the other hand, these stories also allow the human being to link back to mother nature, acting on her, protecting and preserving her.

  • Today Switzerland is in a constant fight with wild animals for food and territory. Villagers do not want the wolves to return because they eat the sheep, the bears are greatly feared by the people who live near the mountain. These animals are almost a legend of the Swiss alps but in the depths of the night forest you still imagine them in their space and habitat.
