My relationship with Iran has long been shaped by longing mixed with shame. This project is my effort to understand what it means to be Iranian in a time of intense anti-Muslim and anti-Iranian sentiment. I reflect on the consequences of our violent history and connect the threads between past and present. Most importantly, and perhaps impossibly, I want to be Iranian again. I want to shed my shame. \r<\/p><p>The 1979 Islamic revolution\u2014a violent reaction to years of foreign influence and resource extraction\u2014was supposed to bring independence and equality to ordinary Iranians. Shia clergymen seized power and enforced cultural restrictions: the mandatory hijab, the outlawing of western music and alcohol, and the crushing of free speech. But hope for independence was replaced by a theocracy. Crippling sanctions against Iran in the aftermath of the U.S. embassy hostage crisis in Tehran produced a weakened economy and a fragile population. The subsequent Iran-Iraq war further devastated Iranian political and cultural terrain. \u2028\r<\/p><p>I was born in the midst of this chaos. Facing a failing economy and growing religious conservatism, my parents moved us across the world. In some ways, it was like we never left: the U.S. embassy hostage crisis and anti-Muslim xenophobia dominated the headlines. We were labeled inherently violent, perpetually oppressed. Many treated us as third-world interlopers. Traumatic events in my former home and racist stereotypes in my current one made me ashamed of my Iranian identity. I returned to Iran in 2017 to piece together fragments of my past and present self. \r<\/p><p>I became obsessed with photographing the mundane: old narrow streets, walnut trees, children playing in water. Other images depict simmering tension in the background, acknowledging that peaceful moments are always and already precarious. But I also want my pictures to witness adaptability and resilience, to show the ways that ordinary Iranians embody humor and humanity despite so many societal constraints. \r<\/p><p>This work is a partial memoir, detailing my personal journey back to Iran: what I found, what I lost, and what hopes I carry forward with me. In the current climate of anti-Iranian sentiment and Islamophobia, I want to engage audiences with a new and different narrative of ordinary Iranians -- so often and so blatantly misunderstood and misrepresented. \r<\/p><p>I plan to exhibit my work in galleries and photo festivals, to use such spaces as a way to engage the audience. I want to do as many artist talks as possible, to invite people to ask questions in an open and honest environment. I\u2019d like to encourage people not to be shy about telling me what they don\u2019t understand about Iran, about its past or present, about Iranians in Iran and elsewhere. I envision such time with an audience as opportunity for collaborative learning. \r<\/p><p>I recognize the importance for artists of color to amplify their voices in a time of extreme Islamophobia. To this end, I am undertaking select interviews and sharing my reflections on Iran publicly. I recently spoke about my journey back to Iran in a new Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) series called \u201cArt is a Story,\u201d which aired in September 2019. Unfortunately, many of these artist interviews and features are low paying or even unpaid work.
