Photographed using a decisive and bold aesthetic strategy, the industry of the global arms trade comes across as banal and even humorous, yet this series of images contains a more sinister undertone suggested by deliberately obscuring any identifiable actors – often literally by the weaponry itself. The anonymity, privatisation and corruption of this industry is underlined by this simple yet effective and consistent aesthetic gesture, which is what makes this work so appealing. By deconstructing and rebuilding her past, using the fragments from her own archive of macabre paintings, performance, intervention, installation, psychology, sci-fi, ero-guro and witchcraft she rejects her own childhood and upbringing. The photographer is granted a slot at a workshop of her choice during the festival next edition, to be held in July 2019 in Cortona, Italy.
Each photographer is granted a 60 minutes portfolio review with a mentor of their choice from the PhMuseum Education Program.
Max Pinckers (b.1988, BE) is an artist based in Brussels, Belgium. His oeuvre explores visual strategies in documentary photography. Not believing in the possibility of sheer objectivity or neutrality, Pinckers advocates a manifest subjective approach, which is made visible through the explicit use of theatrical lighting, stage directions or extras. Extensive research and diligent technical preparation are combined with improvisation to obtain lively, unexpected, critical, simultaneously poetic and documentary images. His works take shape in as self-published artist books and exhibition installations such as The Fourth Wall (2012), Will They Sing Like Raindrops or Leave Me Thirsty (2014), and Margins of Excess (2018). Pinckers is currently a doctoral researcher and lecturer in the arts at the School of Arts / KASK, Ghent and has received multiple international awards, such as the Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg 2015 and the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2018. In 2015 he founded the independent publishing house Lyre Press.

MaryAnne Golon is the Director of Photography at The Washington Post. Before joining The Post in 2012, MaryAnne was the director of photography at Time Magazine and a senior photography editor there for more than 20 years. She graduated with honors from The University of Florida with a B.S. in Journalism. Before joining The Post in 2012, MaryAnne curated Look 3: The Festival of the Photograph and help guide the 2-year product build of a digital asset management system for a major non-profit organization. Golon was also director of photography at Time magazine where she co-managed the international newsweekly’s photography department for more than 15 years. She graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Journalism. Golon has received many individual and team picture-editing awards from the POYi (Pictures of the Year International) and NPPA's (National Press Photographer’s Association) Best of Photojournalism competitions. Communication Arts, Society of Publication Designers, and American Photography have all recognized her work. She was awarded Picture of the Editor of the Year from the IFA Lucie Awards in 2013. She was twice selected for American Photo magazine’s list of the 100 most important people in photography.

Thyago Nogueira is the head of the Contemporary Photography Department at Instituto Moreira Salles, Brazil and editor of ZUM magazine. He has curated exhibitions and edited the catalogues of exhibitions featuring William Eggleston” (“A cor americana”/”The American Color”, 2015), Claudia Andujar (“No lugar do outro”/”In the place of other”, 2015) and Mauro Restiffe (“São Paulo Fora de Alcance”/”São Paulo, Beyond Reach”, 2014). He has guest edited Aperture magazine focused on São Paulo photography (2014), and co-curated the Offside project with Magnum agency during Brazil’s World Cup. He has also curated “Água escondida/ Hidden Water”, a book project by photographer Caio Reisewitz. He is currently working on a Contemporary Brazilian Photography exhibition, as well as a retrospective of photographer Claudia Andujar and a project with artist Rosangela Rennó. He is an advisor for The Photobook Museum and Errata Editions, and has judged and nominated for different awards such as Foam Paul Huf, Fondazione Fotografia Modena, Prix Pictect, Deutsche Börse, Hasselblad, Israeli Museum, GDP4PhotoArt, and Harvard/Robert Gardner.

Louise Fedotov-Clements is the Artistic Director of QUAD, a centre for contemporary art, film and new technologies in Derby UK, since 2001, and the Director of FORMAT International Photography Festival, which she founded in 2004. An independent curator since 1998, she has initiated many commissions, publications, mass participation and exhibitions. A Guest Curator for numerous international exhibitions and festivals, including Dong Gang Photography Festival South Korea; Photoquai Biennale; Les Rencontres Arles, Discoveries; Venice Biennale; Photo Beijing. She has contributed to many publications as producer/writer and is on the Editorial Team of RVM Magazine Italy and Archivo magazine Portugal.
