What Remains

Sarker Protick

Story of my grandparents

The story of John and Prova, my grandparents. After many years working for the Baptist church, they settled down and started living in an old flat in the city. Within the next few years John suffered from a cancer and Prove had strokes. They were not to go out anymore. For them, everything was contained into one single room. This room, the space between the corners and the dust on the walls, all were part of their existence.

While growing up, I found much love and care from them. They were young and strong. As time went by it shaped everything in it’s own way. Bodies took different forms and relations went distant. Grandma’s hair turned gray, the walls started peeling off. Objects, letters, old photographs were all that remained.

The process of making photographs and being part of that was something new and probably exciting to them. It allowed me o spend more time with them. That made them happy, as they felt less alone. After almost 50 years of marriage Prova passed away. I visited John more so he could talk. He tells me stories of their early life, and how they met and so on.

Here, life is silent, suspended. Everything is on a wait.

Sarker Protick

Sarker Protick is an artist from Dhaka, Bangladesh, primarily concerned with light and sound. Graduated from Pathshala South Asian Media Institute and currently teaches at the same institution. He is a member at VII Photo Agency. Protick’s works are grounded around the ideas of Time, Light and Space. His approach incorporates detail observations and subtle gestures to enter into the personal spaces. His minimalist color palette combined with the emptiness of his compositions give the work a timelessness feeling and delicate spectrum of emotion. In 2014, he was named in British Journal Of Photography’s annual ‘Ones to Watch’. The same year, Protick was selected for the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. In 2015, he went on to win a World Press Photo award for his story ‘What Remains’ and was listed in PDN’s 30 emerging photographers of the year. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including Latvian Contemporary Museum of Photography, Chobi Mela International Photography Festival, Dhaka Art Summit etc.
