The series reflects on the canons of beauty, the passage of time, the cultural changes of Colombia during the 70’s, the beauty pageant contests and the use of the photographic archive. The images are newspaper clippings, intervened and recent photos of my mother who was a beauty pageant in 1973.
"The complicit witness has been silent for decades, resigned to darkness and oblivion. The times it has been brought out to light has been to air it, to play what time has already taken away or to recall those times when everything was about to come, when beauty was the youth itself: Olga wearing her gala dress, wearing her youth in her sleeve, carrying it her eyes—now echoes veil the mirror where you looked at the dress, and its glass is darken.”
The series reflects on the canons of beauty, the passage of time, the cultural changes of Colombia during the 70’s, the beauty pageant contests and the use of the photographic archive. The origin of this project is an old album of newspaper clippings and photos of my mother who was a beauty pageant in 1973. I rephotographed, modified and intervened the images with her jewels and objects as a metaphor that retouches the past. To complement the series, recent photographs focus on the vintage clothing, the old objects and the aging body.
