Giulia Bernardi, 1990, Casale Monferrato. Lives and works between Milan, Liguria and Piedmont.
At first she approached photography as self-taught, later she specialized at Cfp Bauer in Milan (2020).
Her research takes inspiration from the concept of ‘psychogeology’ and the identity of places. She wants to understand the relationship between interior landscape, written word and manifest scene. Her approach is sentimental, physical and analytical at the same time: she reconstructs the poetic memories of places by exploring their configuration through the aesthetic practice of walking in them. At the same time, this direct and prolonged relationship with space leads her to catalog portions of the landscape in which she seeks a possible future between humans and ‘non-humans’ and a geological language that is intimate and daily.

I currently work as a photographer, director, and film archive conservator. I use images to explore how violence, myths, and divinity are interconnected and how they shape our understanding of our place in the world. My images attempt to convey the individuality of identifiable places and evoke timelessness, while exploring the tension between the human and the supernatural. My debut film has premiered at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival in France and I have been invited to the MoMA's New Directors/New Films in New York, as well as other festivals.

Uta Genilke, born in 1964, is a graphic designer, photographer and bookmaker. After living in Hamburg and Hong Kong, she settled with her family in rural northern Germany. Her book SOMMERSPIELE was shortlisted for ISSP Photobook Dummy Contest, CHARTA Dummy Book Award, Kassel Dummy Award and SIPF Photobook Award. Her latest work RAUHNACHT won the second prize of the Gomma Grant 2022, was selected for BUP Book Award 2022 and finalist for X Galicia Contemporary Photography Award.

I am a self-taught artist. Born on a farm in rural post-war Germany, I had to overcome significant hurdles on my path to personal and artistic emancipation. As a single mother, I started out with commercial photography as a way to make a living for my family, doing commissions for schools and kindergartens for many years. I started a company and employed several photographers.
Over the following decades, I developed my own style of documentary photography, which is characterised by an unflinching, intensely personal look at the social and political controversies of our time.
I hate the expression "leaving one’s comfort zone", because for me, there is no such thing as a comfort zone. I never make it easy for myself in my work and always push the boundaries of what I can do. My photographic work, I don’t try to comfort or entertain the viewer. Instead, I want to show things that might not be comfortable to look at, but provide new perspectives on topics we have taken for granted too easily.
In 2018 I decided to take life by the horns and started an artist residency on the Spanish island La Gomera, called Casa Tagumerche

Thanks to the tutors and all the other students, my project matured and got to contain the richness of collective work, in which doubts, mistakes, trials and suggestions have been shared and contributed by everyone. The masterclass offered me the rare privilege of witnessing a process that is usually an intimate and unaccessible communication between the artist and the editor. Riccardo Svelto, Folio Class 2020

Visual Artist
Melissa Catanese (b. 1979, Cleveland) combines her images with
archival images into a fluid, sensorial experience that pushes the image beyond its
nostalgic surface challenging ideas of authorship, representation, consumption, and the life
cycle of images. She plays with images as raw material, intuitively teasing out oblique and
guttural interpretations, tapping the inexplicable, and often dormant space within the
surface of a photograph where meaning extends and recedes, comforts and disturbs. She is the
author of "Dive Dark Dream Slow", "Dangerous Women", "Hells Hollow Fallen Monarch", and
"Voyagers".
Her work has been included in the Mulhouse Biennial of Photography, NoFound Photo Fair in
Paris, and at institutions including Light Work, Pier 24 Photography in San Francisco,
Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Aperture Foundation, MoMA Library and ICP
Library in New York. In 2021, Catanese was a remote artist-in-residence at Light Work. She
is the recipient of a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Grant, a BNY Mellon Individual Artist
Gift and has been shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards and
the Foam Paul Huf Award. Catanese contributed texts to “Photo No-Nos: Meditations on What
Not to Shoot” (Aperture, 2021), “Photographers Looking At Photographs: 75 Pictures from the
Pilara Foundation” (Pier 24, 2020), The Photographer’s Playbook (Aperture, 2014) and to the
project “Words Without Pictures” (Aperture, 2010), among other publications.
Photographer
In his enigmatic images, Geert Goiris (b. 1971) confronts us with
perplexity and alienation. In his work of recent years, Geert Goiris puts the predictive
potential of images first. Photographic images are often understood as documents, traces of
a past. In his series Prophet, World Without Us and Flash Forward, the photographer attempts
to reverse this and present images as omens, foreshadowing something yet to occur.
His images are regularly exhibited at renowned art institutions such as Boijmans Van
Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam (2007), Wiels Contemporary Art Center in Brussels (2010),
Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2010), Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg (2011), Le Nouveau Musée
National de Monaco (NMNM) (2012), Museum M in Leuven (2013), the Museum of Contemporary
Photography in Chicago (US) and Centre Pompidou- Metz (2016).
His works are held in international institutional collections such as the Fonds national
d’art contemporain (F), the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Centro de Arte
Contemporáneo de Caja de Burgos (ES), Fotomuseum, Antwerp (B), the Seattle Art Museum (USA)
and MUDAM (L).
Geert Goiris has published seven monographic books with Roma publications Amsterdam: Czar
Bomba, Lying Awake, Prolifération, Prophet, Peak Oil, 2020 and World Without Us. The artist
is represented by Galerie Art: Concept in Paris (France).
Geert teaches practice-based research at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He
taught as visiting lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, LUCA Brussels, CEPV
in Vevey (CH), ISDAT in Toulouse (F), FH Bielefeld (D), and ENSP Arles (F) and MentorMentor
in Gent (B)
