21

Twenty-six years after the Srebrenica Genocide, a reflection on images of the dead, a landscape harbouring secrets and the role images play in this context.

As a former forensic photographer, whose colleagues helped identify some of the over 8,000 victims, I decided to undertake the project to help keep the memory of this act alive in our collective consciousness.

The three types of image here are evidence of ritual: a journey through a landscape of memory; a peace march galvanising friends and families of the deceased, and images of the victims themselves.

At its heart this is an emotional response to the degraded quality of family snapshots together with the violence of the event and my appropriation of that violence. The two victims chosen from the thousands killed, were born in the same year as me, 1974, meaning they died when they were 21.
