The chest of the unregarded (El baúl de los no mirados)

There are beliefs, behaviors and patterns that are passed down from one generation to another, and many times, that heritage is subconscious and cannot be/must not be questioned.

Many of these models are under the influence of the time period or society to which they belong. What works for one generation, doesn't, for another.

Through reflection, I’ve become aware of those models that I was taught since childhood, which nowadays I don’t consider useful, and therefore, unlearn them.

In early 2021, I photographed my grandmother and her house, and these actions have made me reflect about the familiar past, with the good things and the not so good things; it made me confront it, understand it, and forgive it. And in turn, it helped me honor all those who came before me.

My grandmother’s house is filled with photographs. In them, I’ve been able to find these patterns; especially the favoritism between children and grandchildren, that has kept on repeating for a long time.

Based on my experience, I look for these same patterns I identified within my family in images appropriated from other people's archives.
