More Squirrel Than Girl

We hide feral animals deep in the woods. It’s safer if we know where they are. That way, if we end up consumed by our own wildness it’s our own fault for seeking it out. Nothing to do but pray.

Using various forms of photography, including portraiture, still life, landscape, and self-portraiture, this work attempts to challenge the division between nature and my body. Growing up in Arkansas, I spent a lot of time in the woods and was most referred to as, ‘more squirrel than girl.’ Animals allow me to access an experience that exists beyond social constructs, and together we transcend gender, genus, and species. If I excavate my wildness that’s been buried, if I go deep and dark enough, I’ll hit bone.
