Nowhere diary

« A man can be himself only so long as he is alone, and if he does not love solitude, he will not love freedom, for it is only when he is alone that he is really free » Schopenhauer.

Beyond the attraction towards those white and almost lunar landscape, this body of work focuses on isolation and emptiness. It’s the diary of a journey in the middle of nowhere: Iceland during winter.

What stroke me in the middle of those desert lands is the isolation that comes out of it. The subject is photographed alone as if forgotten. The monotony of the surrounding amplify the feeling of solitude. You can almost hear the silence in some of the pictures. Those images appear to me as the reflect of an inner landscape, an intimate turmoil. As we live in a world where speed has become the norm, contemplation seems increasingly difficult to achieve. Loneliness then appears as a hand stretched towards this beyond but it can also leads to depression. Sometime this omnipresent white horizon even feel overwhelming and leads to a sort of vertigo. At other times, it’s a feeling of peace and freedom that comes out of the image. There is a melancholic poetry within this snow covering everything around, a grace in the those cold and white stretch.

I’m often shared between a taste for solitude and contemplation which results in a sense of freedom and the fear of isolation and desertion. It’s very likely the reason I feel so attracted toward those deserted landscapes.
