That Which I Did Not See, was produced during a three-months residency in Lisbon. It started with words - a wall full of words - that childhood memories evoked. I explored the idea of Silence - what is not said, not talked about - and started to take pictures around the city. As the project evolved, it became more about how my own silence has shaped the way I see the world.
Each picture is associated with the GPS coordinate of the place where the picture was taken. My goal is to encourage the viewer to confront his or her own experience of the place - either physically or online - with mine, and question what is in the act of seeing.
Along with the images, the words that came out for me, from this conscious experience of seeing, are the following:
I thought that if I looked long enough
I would understand
But silence is a veil
A prism through which I see only shapes
The people who knew are long gone
Secrets remain in the shadows
I look at the cracks seeking to solve the mystery
Looking for signs unknown to me
I have yet to decipher their language
But I’ll keep looking
For that which I did not see
