Here, Now

Dannielle Bowman’s work is engaged with ideas around post-colonialism, power, privilege and landscape. In her ongoing project, Here, Now, she is particularly interested in how various landscapes have been used throughout history by certain people to gain power over others. In this work, she is asking questions about privilege and power gained through access to land and information. These photos work to challenge the privileged histories passed down through selective telling of certain stories based on what information, people and places have been deemed important and what information, people and places have not.

The photographs in Here, Now, visually investigate the ways in which earth derived materials are used by humans and show that use. These photographs make connections between the materials that make up sculptures and monuments, the materials of the landscape and the land itself. It is an act of remembering the bigger picture - the sources of the objects and the reasons for their existence. In this work, Bowman is drawing these connections by imaging landscapes, objects made of earthly materials and the earth itself, so that there is a constant maneuvering between source and outcome, material and object, past and present, human and land.

Dannielle Bowman is a visual artist working with photography. Bowman received a BFA from the Cooper Union and an MFA in Photography from the Yale School of Art, where she was awarded the Richard Benson Prize.
