The Root

The Root is a continuation of my photographical searching in displacements. The project is based on the story of my grandfather who was forced to exile during the brutal guatemalan dictatorship (Jorge Ubico 1931-1944). The first time I listened to the story, I got fascinated and it pushed me to interview my family trying to get more and preciser information. I just got some few answers with emotional-criptical codes that revealed superficially the harshness of the abrupt exile. Afterwards I collected few photos from several family albums and I found a photo which represented the way to the world of a political activist leading the opposition to the official regime in a very little town in west Guatemala. This photo series is a reflection about exile, the silence constructed over generations in the family/social structure as a consequence of the permanent presence of a repressive and terror dictatorship’s system.
