Stardust / Polvo De Estrellas
[English]In Mascarilla, in the Chota Valley, Ecuador, the landscape is rocky, lunar, and galactic. The dust forms weightless hurricanes that carry whispers and timeless tales. Grandmothers have told these stories since the time this place was known as the blood and death valley; since the time their forefathers arrived across the seas from distant Africa. They are tales that explain the secrets of the world and of love and death; tales that spread fear and talk of hidden traditions.
It is the women who almost anonymously keep the town afloat. They beget the stars and preserve them. At night, the stellar spheres hide and float. If someone sees them, they will lose their human shape forever. They will become the dust from which we are all a part; they will become stardust.
Stardust is a photographic work created between 2015 and 2017 in Mascarilla, a small town located in the Chota Valley in Ecuador, South America. It contains images that reinterpret the intangible heritage of the Afro-Ecuadorian community of the highlands. It is a visual story that represents the everyday life of the people by means of symbols extracted from the stories spoken of by the inhabitants of the town. The project speaks of the symbiosis between present traditions and contemporary influences. It is a celebration of the imaginary space of a town that dreams, just like any other.
[Español]En Mascarilla, Valle del Chota, Ecuador, el paisaje se torna rocoso, lunar, galáctico. Se forman ingrávidos huracanes que llevan mensajes y murmullos de historias nuevas y antiguas.Leyendas que cuentan las abuelas, que se han transmitido con música y voz desde siempre, desde que el lugar se conocía como el valle de sangre y muerte, desde que los antepasados llegaron dejando su lejana África. Historias que explican el mundo, el amor y la muerte, que infunden temor y narran tradiciones ocultas.
Son las mujeres quienes anónimamente mantienen el pueblo a flote. Ellas engendran las estrellas y las cuidan. Por las noches, las esferas estelares se esconden y flotan. Si alguien se encuentra con una de ellas, perderá su forma humana para siempre. Se transformará en el polvo del que todos somos parte, el polvo de estrellas.
Polvo de Estrellas es un trabajo fotográfico realizado entre 2015 y 2016 en Mascarilla, un pequeño pueblo ubicado en el Valle del Chota en Ecuador, Sud américa. Contiene imágenes que reinterpretan la herencia intangible de la comunidad Afroecuatoriana de la sierra. Es una narración visual que representa la vida diaria de su gente a través de símbolos extraídos de las historias narradas oralmente por los habitantes de la zona. Este proyecto habla de la simbiosis entre las tradiciones con el presente mixturado con influencias contemporáneas. Es una celebración del espacio imaginario de un pueblo que sueña, como cualquier otro.
[ES] Durante las vacaciones, algunas comunidades del valle se reunen al pie del río Chota o del río Mira para divertirse y refrescarse durante la tarde.Un niño ha dibujado en la espalda de su amigo con la blanca tierra del río. .[EN] During holidays, many communities of the valley get together near the Chota River or the Mira river to have fun and refresh themselves in the afternoon. [ES] La Bomba es el ritmo tradicional del pueblo Afro- Ecuatoriano que vive en el Valle del Chota. El Baile tradicional se realiza a pies descalzos. Las mujeres cargan una botella en la cabeza en equilibrio. Doña Julia, una de las líderes mujeres de la comunidad, baila dentro de su casa frente a la imagen de su esposo de joven.[EN] "Bomba" is the traditional music of Afro-Ecuadorians that live in the Chota Valley. The traditional dance includes women with bare feet with traditional skirts dancing with a bottle on their heads. Doña Julia, one of the female leaders, dances inside her house in front of the picture of her husband when he was young.
ES// El Valle del Chota se encuentra entre áridas montalas entre las provincias de Carchi e Imbabura, en la sierra ecuatoriana en América del Sur. Es elúnico lugar de la sierra ecuatoriana con asentamiento afrodescendiente. La mayoría se encuentran en la costa. EN// The Chota Valley is a place located between the arid mountains on the Imbabura and Carchi provinces in Ecuador, South América. It is the only place with Afro-Ecuadorean settlements in the highlands, since most of them stay in the coast area. Even the mountains hide when arriving to the Chota Valley.
[ES] Cada julio, durante las fiestas de Mascarilla, una nueva reina es electa. La ceremonia incluye representaciones tradicionales de la comunidad afro ecuatoriana y su historia, además de varios ritmos musicales.[EN] Each year on July, during the traditional festivities on Mascarilla, a new queen is elected to represent the community. ES// Los escombros de un viejo ingenio hoy son el albergue de cientos de cactus espinosos. Esta fábrica fue testigo de cientos de abusos hacia los afrodescendientes llevados a estas tierras. Solamente hace 50 años los habitantes pudieron organizarse para comprar las tierras y fundar su pequeño pueblo. En estos días dentro de las ruinas algunos cactus crecen. Las mujeres quieren construir un centro cultural en este lugar.EN// On an old cane hacienda, people of the zone used to be exploited by the landowners. About 50 years ago, the inhabitants organized themselves to buy their own lands and founded this little town. Nowadays inside the cane hacienda ruins there are several cacti growing. The women want to build a cultural center there.

However, Afro-descendant communities that once were relegated and stigmatized, today are proud of their present and origins.
[ES] Niño juega escuchando los murmullos del agua.Comúnmente el clima en Mascarilla es muy caliente. Por esta razón en la época de la esclavitud, los indígenas que trabajaban en las plantaciones morían. Entonces fueron remplazados por los " Más Karillas" una adaptación del kichwa que se refería a los más fuertes: los negros esclavos que llegaron del África. De allí el pueblo recibe su nombre.[EN] A kid plays with water.Often the weather in Mascarilla is very hot. This is why during slavery time, the indigenous people working in cane plantations died because of the heat and they were replaced with african descendent people.One of the problems that the Mascarilla community faced when they obtained their own lands was the water monopoly by the cane factory. Now the community has managed to get this resource.
[ES] El paisaje se confunde con llantas de autos. Por mucho tiempo las cercanías del valle eran botaderos de escombros. Hoy aun quedan algunos restos.[EN] The landscape gets mixed with car wheels. Some years ago, the valley was a place where the trash collecting trucks threw the garbage. Now some places remain waste deposits.

Sin embargo algunas de ellas aun se sienten aun ocultas bajo una tela de machismo que envuelve el espacio. Cada paso que ellas dan cambia el futuro de las nuevas generaciones.[EN] A girl hides behind a mirror. In Mascarilla, women have organized to carry out many of the projects that keep the community alive. Nevertheless some of them feel hidden under the male dominance that surrounds the space. Each step that the women walk, changes the future of the new generations.
[ES] "Djembé" Méndez, percusionista de la banda de Marabú que toca el ritmo "Bomba",camina por el poblado antes de una presentación frente a una audiencia local. La banda toca la música tradicional del Valle del Chota: la Bomba, una mezcla de ritmos ancestrales africanos con influencias españolas y contemporáneas.[EN] "Djembé" Méndez, percussionist of the Marabú band, which plays traditional music called "Bomba", walks in a sunny day before a show in the community. Nowadays, the inhabitants of the town claim the importance of the safeguarding their traditions. The Marabú orchestra has traveled across the word spreading the Bomba with its african, indigenous and contemporary influences.

[Es] Las mujeres permanecen anónimas en la historia oficial del pueblo aunque sean ellas quienes mantienen el pueblo a flote en el sentido social y económico. Ellas organizan pequeñas cooperativas de ahorro familiares y mensualmente algunos de los ahorros son utilizados para un proyecto de la comunidad o ayudar a alguna de las familias que lo necesite.[En]Women remain anonymous on the town's official history, although they are the ones that keep the town afloat. They organize small cooperatives for families to save money. Once every other month, they put some of the community savings into a particular project managed by one of them. It can be a personal issue like medicines for a family member or a project that helps the whole town.
